FM Science and Technology Center Europe Settles in the Cloche d’Or district
On March 17, the American insurer FM broke ground on its new European headquarters in Luxembourg. This article looks back at the key event and presents the project developed and built by Félix Giorgetti.
On Rue Robert Stumper, the former Citroën garage has been demolished to make way for a major and unprecedented project in Luxembourg: the FM Science and Technology Center Europe, the European headquarters of FM, an American mutual insurance company specializing in corporate property coverage.
A massive 25,000 m² campus will focus on advanced research in the fields of climate hazards, industrial technologies, and loss prevention solutions related to cyber risks.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the project—developed and built by Félix Giorgetti —was officially held on March 17. It brought together FM representatives including Malcom Roberts (President and CEO), Randy Hodge (COO), Chris Dempsey (EMEA Division Director), as well as Gilles Roth (Minister of Finance), Stéphanie Obertin (Minister of Digitalization and Minister of Higher Education and Research), Paul and Marc Giorgetti, and Tatania Fabeck, head of Fabeck Architectes. The audience also included representatives from local institutions such as Mario Grotz, Director of Luxinnovation, and from the LIST (Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology).
FM stands out for its proactive approach to risk prevention: its strict construction standards for client properties help minimise damage in the event of an incident and ensure a quick recovery.
A Center of Expertise for Risk Management
FM has been present in Luxembourg since 2017, and through its new center, it aims to better support its European clients.
“This investment marks a major milestone in FM’s development. Luxembourg is a strategically key location due to its central position in Europe. This site will become a real partnership hub and center of expertise in risk management, with a significant impact across the European region.”
A Unique Project in Luxembourg
The site will also foster strong collaboration with local institutions such as LIST to develop risk solutions, strengthen business resilience, and create a positive impact on the environment.
“FM’s decision to expand here highlights Luxembourg’s strengths as a center and hub of expertise. This research into financial risk related to climate hazards and loss prevention is a great example of how finance and insurance can go beyond their traditional roles,” noted Finance Minister Gilles Roth.
Designed by Fabeck Architectes, the building impresses with its originality and elegance. Spanning 200 meters in length and 60 meters in width, with a height of 14 meters, it has a unique and harmonious silhouette. Its refined design, inspired by the diamond shape of FM’s logo, stands out with a luminous, multi-faceted façade.
The complex will include offices as well as 11 laboratories, some of which are collaborative, allowing FM clients, prospects, colleagues, and partners to receive training and learn. A “training education” area will provide engineers with an immersive space to train on machines and refine their expertise in on-site risk assessment and management.
A Sustainable Building
The site has also been designed with energy performance and environmental sustainability in mind.
It will be equipped with solar panels and a geothermal heating and cooling system to cover a large portion of its energy needs. “We are committed to sustainability. This building aims to meet the highest certifications: BREEAM Excellent, WELL Gold, and a carbon-neutral footprint. We plan to produce over 100,000 kilowatts of solar energy per year,” explained Randy Hodge.
An Excellent Collaboration
Developing and building this research and innovation landmark in Luxembourg for FM is an honor and a source of real pride for our company. It is the realization of passion and expertise built over four generations, and the result of a relationship based on trust, as highlighted by Marc Giorgetti during the ceremony: “FM and Félix Giorgetti share common values rooted in quality, excellence, and most importantly, trust. Our partnership is based on respect, which makes our collaboration so enriching. Despite all our experience in construction, we continue to learn. FM has taught us valuable lessons about building resilience. This knowledge exchange fuels innovation and excellence.”
Our managing partner also extended congratulations to all teams involved in the completion of the project. “Thank you to everyone who made this project possible: our partners, local authorities, engineers, consultants, and the incredible team working behind the scenes. And of course, to our construction teams—you are the backbone of this project.”
