A new home for 1,400 frogs
Category

A major investment in nature
On the site of the former Agrocenter in Mersch, where the new Rives de l’Alzette neighbourhood will soon take shape, nature has had a lovely surprise in store for us, as it has already welcomed its first inhabitants: frogs!
In Mersch, the ‘Rives de l’Alzette’ housing project is mobilising significant resources
to combine urban development with the protection of local wildlife.
This is certainly a strong environmental commitment, but one that comes at a price. Félix Giorgetti has, in particular, funded the rescue of the amphibians that have made their home on the site.
The operation cost nearly 200,000 euros.
A strict transfer protocol
Since the start of the year, all necessary measures have been put in place to capture the animals and relocate them to a buffer zone situated to the north-east of the site, which is not affected by the immediate works.
The technical infrastructure is substantial:
- 1,600 metres of opaque PVC fencing to guide the fish’s movements.
89 collection buckets emptied four times a week during the migration period;
constant ecological monitoring to ensure the fish are transported under optimal conditions.
An aquatic paradise on the banks of the Alzette
This temporary arrangement ensures that the construction sites will be cleared for this spring and summer 2026.
From 2027, the final phase aims to return more than 9,000 m² of wetlands to nature. These new habitats, which will be tailor-made along the Alzette, will offer amphibians a sustainable and protected living environment. This is the very aim of Rives de l’Alzette: to create perfect harmony between modern urban planning and respect for our natural heritage.
With the Rives de l’Alzette project, Félix Giorgetti demonstrates his ability to integrate complex environmental considerations into the management of major construction projects.
Rives de l'Alzette
A new community hub in the heart of Mersch
Led by the company of the same name — the result of a partnership between Félix Giorgetti, Nouvelle Luxlait and the CEPAL Group — this development is one of the municipality’s most ambitious projects. Spanning 16 hectares near the railway station, it will eventually see the creation of some 1,000 homes.
More than just a residential area, the aim is to create a truly vibrant living environment. Future residents will benefit from a comprehensive local environment including shops, restaurants and local services, including a crèche. Generous green spaces and play areas will enhance the offering, fostering social connections and everyday well-being.
The project will be carried out in several phases. Ideally situated near the P+R car park, the first phase will comprise apartment blocks and detached houses combining comfort and practicality. To ensure a refined aesthetic, an architectural competition is currently underway. The winning proposal will be unveiled shortly and will set the stylistic tone for this new urban development.
This is an initiative well worth keeping an eye on, as it is fully in keeping with the dynamism of Mersch, a rapidly growing municipality at the heart of the Grand Duchy.
