The future N1 bridge takes shape
24 steel beams, 100 m of structural steelwork and two lifting operations: in September and October, the new OA1154 bridge took shape above the A1 motorway at the Senningerberg interchange.
This new structure will enable the N1 to cross the A1 motorway. Built for the Roads and Bridges Administration, it forms part of the Hohenhof interchange development. The project supports the widening of the N1 and will improve access to Findel, as well as to the multimodal hub bringing together tram, bus, P+R and active mobility connections.
Once completed, the two bridges will share traffic flows. The new structure will carry traffic towards Findel, with two traffic lanes, one bus lane and a shared path for pedestrians and cyclists. The existing bridge will serve Senningerberg, with two traffic lanes, one bus lane and a pavement.
Two days of lifting operations
Manufactured and welded on site by Cimolai, the steel structure comprises a total of 24 beams divided into three sections: a 40 m central span flanked by two end sections of approximately 20 m each.
The central section, made up of eight beams measuring 40 m in length and weighing 70 tonnes each, was installed first, on 5 September. Two mobile cranes positioned alongside the motorway worked in tandem: the first lifted the beams onto a lorry, which transported them to the foot of the bridge, while the second crane placed them onto the piers.
One month later, on 6 October, the two end sections were installed, completing the structure.
A steel and concrete structure
Measuring 100 m long and 32 m wide, the bridge combines a steel framework with reinforced concrete. It rests on two abutments, located at either end of the structure, and eight 6 m-high piers.
To create their distinctive shape, the teams used bespoke formwork designed specifically for the structure.
The next milestone will be the installation of the precast concrete slabs, scheduled for the end of November.
