Successful sliding operation in Dommeldange

A major milestone was reached this Pentecost weekend in the removal of level crossing no. 13 in Dommeldange.

Our teams successfully carried out a major operation to install the new underpass at the trackbed level. A true race against the clock, successfully completed.

The PN13 project is part of an initiative to make the area safer by replacing the old level crossing with modern infrastructure dedicated to active mobility. After months of meticulous preparation, the time had come to place the structure into its final position.

A smooth and highly precise operation

To minimize the impact on commuters, this delicate intervention took place over the Pentecost weekend, taking advantage of a limited interruption in rail traffic.

Our teams worked in continuous shifts, day and night, to successfully complete this highly sensitive phase.

To clear the space required for the sliding of the structure, several complex preparatory operations had to be carried out within very tight timeframes:

  • The removal and adaptation of temporary shoring elements;

  • The destressing of the tie-backs and the removal of the walers;

  • The installation of struts and horizontal tie-rods to secure the area;

  • The final earthworks at the level of the old track.

On the right track

Once the track area was cleared and the ground meticulously prepared, the precast concrete structure — measuring 15.50 m long, 5.50 m wide, and 4.50 m high — was slid into its final position.

As soon as the box structure was in place and backfilling operations were completed, the tracks were relaid over the new structure to allow rail traffic to resume.

This type of operation requires seamless coordination between the various trades, advanced technical expertise, and rigorous execution.

With this key milestone achieved, the project is now entering a new development phase. Ultimately, this underpass will allow cyclists and pedestrians to travel safely along the Alzette via specially designed ramps and stairs, permanently eliminating the risks associated with crossing the railway tracks.
