Ferrac leader in reinforcing steel in Luxembourg
On 27 March, the 3rd edition of ‘Gio Group Discovery’ brought together nearly a hundred employees of the Giorgetti Group in Bettembourg. This time, they headed for Bettembourg to discover Ferrac, its activities and expertise, and to explore its production site.
Ferrac is part of the Giorgetti Group. Founded in 1979, and a member of the Giorgetti Group since 1991, it is the leading scrap metal company in Luxembourg, and is now the country's largest shipowner. Its production site, covering 1.2 hectares, operates at a brisk pace to supply national shipyards.
Every year, Ferrac takes delivery of nearly 10 lorries of crude steel a day and produces around 40,000 tonnes of steel.
With a team of 170 employees, including 153 workers (106 fitters, 11 drivers and 36 workshop staff), the company provides a wide range of services: supply, shaping, assembly, delivery and fitting.
Recognised expertise
Faced with growing demand, our staff work two shifts, and some machines run continuously.
Ferrac's responsiveness and reliability are at the heart of its success. Our customers know they can count on us and that they won't miss a concreting job,’ says Luis Nunes, Ferrac's managing director. Even for last-minute orders, we prepare them immediately for delivery the following morning.
Major projects currently underway include the ecological Uebersyren wastewater treatment plant and the new Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg.
A busy site
After theory and an interactive quiz with prizes, the participants explored the site, guided by Ferrac employees. During the visit, they were able to see the various machines in action, in particular those used to bend bars with diameters ranging from 8 to 40 mm, manufacture columns and produce mesh specially designed to optimise installation.
Ferrac also manages a two-month strategic stock, ensuring constant supplies from its 14 European suppliers.
‘We constantly monitor steel prices and adjust our orders according to fluctuations. In times of crisis, we have even stocked up to five months' worth of raw materials to keep costs under control.
A shift towards digitalisation
Since 2020, Ferrac has been moving towards digitisation in order to optimise the management of worksites and resources.
In around two years' time, the company will also be investing in new, ultra-modern machinery to automate production. The parts will go in at one end and come out ready at the other,’ explains Luis Nunes. Some of our machines are 35 years old and run on two shifts. Replacing them will give us greater efficiency and better finishing quality. Our ambition is also to develop our international presence.
A moment of conviviality
The visit ended with a convivial aperitif, because let's not forget that the ‘Gio Group Discoveries’ are above all an opportunity for Giorgetti Group employees to get together and exchange ideas in a warm atmosphere!
